Alright, so next Tuesday our Malaysian Football team will play a friendly against Chelsea from England. No I won't be going. I was pretty interested at first, but after thinking about it I don't think there's much difference if I watch it at home.
Well I did see Chelsea twice in 2003 during the Premier League Asia Cup. Thats a bi-annual tournament that the Premier League hosts in a random Asian country. At that time it was the mighty Newcastle United, relegation survivors Birmingham City and Roman Abramovich's Chelsea. Along with the Malaysian national team or course.
Now that Chelsea was still under construction with about half of the new signings they made that summer. They didn't have to likes of Crespo, Mutu, Makelele and Joe Cole who came in after the tournament. But they did have Damien Duff in that squad, who's a very exciting player.
Chelsea definitely thought playing Malaysia would be a walk in the park so they sent out a very weak team. Frank Lampard and John Terry were the only note-worthy ones there, and they were both only decent at that time. Their plan backfired as Malaysia were running circles around them but Chelsea took the lead against the run of play thanks to a bad linesman decision. Lampard the goal scorer.
The best part came a few minutes after. Malaysia corner. A deep in-swinging corner was sent in. John Terry slips and Hairuddin Omar jumps high and heads in the equaliser. I won't forget his name. He really raised the roof with that one. The whole stadium jumped to their feet, it really felt amazing.
Well with 10 minutes to go in the second half. Hasselbaink, Duff and the stars were sent on and then Malaysia were goners. Hasselbaink with two and Duff with one (i think).
Now I'm sorry Chelsea fans but I highly doubt some of the first teamers will feature, especially those who played in Euro 2008. Trust me, you'll see a few reserve team players there. Arsenal and Man Utd are on tours as well and no one who played in the summer's tournament have featured for them. Oh did I forget to mention Drogba isn't coming. Now Drogba is one player I was looking forward to see since he's such an awesome player.
Don't go being idiots and predicting a double digit score, Malaysia isn't a very good footballing country but they'll give it their best. Haha, don't discount possible injuries. Glen Johnson hobbled off the last time Chelsea came.
Oh this little bit might disappoint some fans. I had my souvenir programme and a black marker pen hoping to get some autographs. I did get one from Stan Lazaridis of Birmingham. But I could have gotten another from Frank Lampard. Me and this other guy were beside the players tunnel and he walked by. We called out his name, he gave us a look and then... He walked away! Cheap bastard.
Well you should go enjoy the day anyway. Don't expect such free-flowing, fast and audacious football as you would normally see from the red of Arsenal. Haha. I mean come on, it's just Chelsea.
